Garbage Disposer Clogs and Maintenance
Garbage disposers are one type of fixture clog that is common due to the incorrect use of the disposer. One of Plumb Tite’s licensed plumbers can repair or replace your garbage disposer to get you back up and running in no time!
There are some preventive measures that can be taken to keep your garbage disposer from clogging for years of trouble free usage. First make sure to run water and turn your disposer on prior to introducing food. You should also maintain running water for 20 to 30 seconds after use to help the solids get farther down to a larger waste pipe.
If your garbage disposer is clogged or locked up (humming and not spinning) there should be a key attached to your garbage disposer. This key can be inserted into the bottom of the motor and turned in a counter clockwise motion to try to free the stoppage and unlock the motor. If the disposer is still stopped up the sink waste will need to be disassembled to clear any other obstructions.
If this is a situation that you can not resolve on your own, Plumb Tite has a 24 hour dispatch of qualified service technicians that have a fully stocked truck and can help resolve your issue quickly.
Garbage Disposers and the Environment
Some people ask if garbage disposers are good for the environment, and the answer is absolutely! Food scraps are a big part of our household waste. This is something that is dealt with on a daily basis and can create a lot of garbage.
Garbage disposers use less than fifty cents per year to operate and use less than 1% of household water usage. So from an energy perspective garbage disposers are very efficient. The food waste you put through your garbage disposer is 70% water. By moving it through the disposer to the sewer system it gets treated at the water plant. But the food scrap that ends up in the landfill has to decompose which creates methane gas. In fact, at capable wastewater treatment plants, food waste can be recycled into renewable energy and fertilizer. For these reasons a garbage disposer is an eco friendly or green addition to your home.
New Technology of a garbage disposer
Years ago the technology was so bad that disposers sounded like small lawnmowers and did little more than a Slap Chop. They would leave such large pieces that often they would simply clog the drain. Many people 40 and older know exactly what I’m talking about and why we still are asked to remove the garbage disposer from under a customer’s sink.
But the new technologies led by In Sink Erator, the industry leader, technology has come a long way. They are quiet and have heavy duty motors to help ensure the highest performance for a long life.
